This project started with an early German cabinet design that I had seen in a book, it was covered with various carvings that were very different to any thing that I had ever seen. Being my first serious attempt at wood carving, I needed inspiration from somewhere on how t decorate the cabinet with my own theme. The works of Michelangelo had often inspired me so I decided to try to carve based on his works. I had a few books on Michelangelo's works I began selecting and sketching onto timber panels the I would carve. One of the biggest sources came from the reading room of the Laurentian Library and from decorative pieces around some of his most famous statues. The Two statues on the cabinet were variations of his work. A book I put together on the cabinet, from the felling of the tree to the completed cabinet, is currently held in the archives of the Powerhouse Museum. The measurements for this cabinet are; overall height 1965 mm, mid height 1255 mm, depth at base 420 mm, width of top 1145 mm, width of mid 1270 mm. The cabinet is made from Australian Red Cedar.
